Writing Prompt: What is Your Character(s) Relationship to the Truth
Getting to know our characters by exploring their relationship with the truth

Taking the time to know your characters

Just like we need to invest the time and energy into getting to know ourselves and the people in our lives, we have to do the same to really get to know our characters. Even if you don’t use the information directly in your story, the deeper insight you have into your characters, the more depth you can create in them for your reader.

What is your main character(s) relationship to the truth?

This writing prompt, what is your main character(s) relationship to the truth, is powerful because it reveals a character’s core values and worldview. How your character defines truth shapes every decision they make and will inevitably inform your story.

Writing Prompt: Use the following questions to explore how the "truth" impacts your character's choices:

  • Is truth a moral compass? Do they see it as a guiding principle, non-negotiable even when it hurts?

  • Is truth a tool? Do they bend or shape it to suit their goals, believing perception matters more than reality?

  • Is truth a burden? Is it something they carry alone, perhaps to protect others or themselves?

  • Is truth conditional? Does it change depending on loyalty, survival, desires, or love?

  • Is truth freedom? Is it a way for them to break free of shame, secrets, or manipulation?

  • Is truth irrelevant? Do they believe power, results, or emotions matter more than facts/truth?
